Ryken Christopher is SEVEN years old.
(just waiting on pictures)
March 2, 2019
He is 45lbs and 44.5 inches tall. He wears mainly 5T clothes with a few 6T - but they seem to be a big to big for his skinny, on the shorter side frame. His shoe size is a 10-11 and growing. For his birthday, he got the back of his seat he sits on in the van taken off and he was so excited about being able to just sit in a booster seat. He has lost 3 teeth altogether now.
Ryken is a fun kid! Always using his imagination, coming up with a new game to play, or building something new. He loves a good cardboard box to draw on, cut holes in or be a home for his stuffed animals or a parking garage for his cars. He loves building things with mega-tiles or mega blocks and comes up with some neat creations. He enjoys coming up with different games or ways to play with his brothers and sisters. It's fun to see, but if it doesn't how he imagined or came up with, he also can have a hard time enjoying it. He also has a lot of energy and these winter months are so hard for him to get that energy out cooped up in the house. He and Drayden love to wrestle and they do a lot. He loves making a big pile with the bean bag chairs, blankets, pillows and jumping in them. He is always on his knees being an animal of some sort. We had the same issues this year as last year, which was always having holes in his pants. He loves a new shirt like the next person and wears it over and over. He loves watching TV and playing on the iPad...a little too much. Thankfully, when Avonlea was born, he was stop watching the show when she was crying and tried to help her. But other times, he would turn up the TV or try and get her to be quiet so he could hear the show. Which was helpful, but for selfish reasons. He has really picked up a love for drawing. I introduced him to ArtHub on YouTube and he really enjoyed learning how to draw pictures by following each step. He also got some "How to Draw" books for his birthday. He loves making pictures for school in his writing book. I let him choose what he wants to write about and he often thinks about what he wants to draw a picture of. He loves music and is always asking to put some on at the house and turn it up in the car. He loves to read all the titles and he sure enjoys dancing too. He is a big help around the house. He helps the kids in the morning get breakfast going and he helps clean windows, bathrooms, put away laundry. He always is asking to bring plates over to the table when it is time to eat. He helps a lot in so many different ways. Not always with a joyful and ready to serve heart- but none of us do. He is pretty excited that Raya has learned how to wash dishes now, so he doesn't have to as often. I can tell he is one who doesn't care for messes. He makes his bed in the morning without being told or reminded, he likes to clean out the van because it gets messy with the toys they bring in, books that are around and trash. So he gets the vacuum in there and cleans it up, get the trash bag full and puts the books away and brings the toys back into the house. He also will notice how the living room is messy throughout the day and say "I hate the mess" and will clean it up on his own. And other times, when all the kids are to clean up, he will only do "his" part and leave the rest for others, trying to make it far. We keep reminding him that it isn't clean till it is clean and you don't always just clean up your mess you make. Ryken loves people and being around people, thinking of people, remembering people - he is a big people person. He is always up for the next playdate, or time outside with the neighbor kids. He is very thoughtful about people's prayer requests or appointments or birthdays, he remembers the little details that he has heard from prayer requests at church, or he looks at the calendar the asks whose birthday is next so he can make a card for them. He loves a good schedule. I used to talk to a friend every other week (before Avonlea was born) and he would remember which Friday it was. He knows when it is trash day, he knows who week it is for Sunday Fellowship meals, he reminds me I need to be pumping when I am past my time. He is very attention to detail on the things that interest him. Most the time it is helpful, but other times it can get annoying and a little legalistic. On the other hand, we can tell him the same things 100 times and it doesn't stick or click. He listens to and pays attention to what is important and exciting to him.
Somethings Ryken doesn't like are trying new things. He is very easily scared and fearful of the unknown. Almost too much, like all the other kid around him are smiling and laughing and if he doesn't know what is going to happen, he will be freaking out and crying. He doesn't like it when he see's others in potential danger (like Avonlea rolling off the changing table). He doesn't like loosing privileges. He doesn't like running errands to certain stores like Hobby Lobby (although I told him he would like it if we were going to pick out a model car for him and he agreed.) He doesn't like it when Drayden or Raya lay or put pillows and blankets on his head - he feels claustrophobic. He doesn't like the feeling of being stuck.
Ryken is in his first year of homeschool and he is doing well. He really enjoys science as we are learning about animals and he really likes knowing the facts about animals. He is very good at Math and I am thankful he doesn't struggle like his mommy does. He has mastered addition and we are a few weeks into subtraction and so far, its going fairly smooth. His writing has improved a lot since we started. And he is reading now. He is loving being able to read little books and he loves when the music is on and he will read the title of the songs. He points out words all around town now too. And Raya asks him what things say all throughout the day and he seems to like the ability to tell her. Reading is his least favorite subject for school, and often leaves it to the last and we usually have the biggest attitudes around reading - but I can tell he is enjoying it more. He is picking up books on his own and figuring them out and is excited about it. He is a great speller as well, due to his great memory. He enjoys History and the things he is learning there, the interesting stories and characters - except for Odysseus, that was a loooong book in his mind. So overall, the first year is going well. We are quite behind because of the difficult transition to being a family of 6, but we will either go into the summer some or pick it back up next year. He has a pen pal as well, which is exciting to him. One of my good friends in AZ, her little boy and Ryken are pen pals. It's good writing practice and good practice of formulating questions.
Ryken is a good sleeper, he is usually ready for bed at the end of the day. He goes to sleep around 8:30-9pm and sleeps till 7-8am. He is usually one of the first ones up. He has been a big help with the big kids sharing a room. He will talk to Drayden in the middle of the night if he wakes up crying. They are to wait to come up till it is 8am then they can start breakfast. He can tell time, so he watches the clock downstairs. He only naps if he is sick.
Ryken is our eater. My goodness, can this boy eat. He is always asking for more and enjoys 98% of what is given to him. He loves so many things. I don't know how many times I tell him what is for supper and he says "Oh, that's one of my favorites". He usually asks everyday what is for supper too. He eats rather quickly and can be messy, but he eats good and we are thankful. He remembers to take his dishes to the counter on his own now.
